Frequently asked Questions
What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Psychogenealogy?
These are usually traumas, secrets or conflicts experienced by the ascendants of a subject that would condition his psychological disorders, his diseases or his unexplainable foreign behaviour. Psychogenealogy, therefore, remains primarily a therapeutic method that refers to genealogical data and psychological impacts on descendants.
Psychotherapy is a specialized discipline within the realm of psychiatry. In many cases, a psychotherapist is already trained as a psychiatrist or psychologist. However, there are mental help professionals who specifically focus on psychotherapy from the beginning and do not have prior training in psychiatry.
Therefore Psychogenealogy is a method to understand those influences that ancestors have transmitted to the person and Psychotherapy is a process of treatment that employs the theories developed from psychology research. The treatments rely on talking to patients in accordance with some specific communication techniques, rather than on using medications, although some patients may require both talk therapy and medicinal treatment.
What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Coaching?
Generally speaking, coaching is more focused on helping you achieve your future goals, while psychotherapy tends to have more of a past and present focus. That being said, many Psychotherapists should be able to help you understand how the past contributes to your present, and Coaches can help you achieve your future goals. The focus in psychotherapy is more on healing from the past, while the focus in coaching is more on getting you to where you wish to be next.
What is a Genogram?
A genogram is a family tree that comes alive. Families are complex systems that interact with other communities and kin groups, of which they are a part of, and they cannot be fully understood without the wider context in which they live. Genograms contain a wealth of information on the families represented because they allow you to illustrate not only how members of a family tree relate to each other, but how they are a product of their time, by their behaviours, friendships, and many more.
Genograms can also be used to determine diseases within a family or other types of traits. Genograms can therefore be quite useful for understanding not just relationships but also other types of hereditary information in a family-based on health, skills, occupations that run in the family, etc.
What is a Medical and/or psychological Genogram?
One of the reasons to research your family history is to find out about hereditary issues like diseases, disorders and the like, that run in your family. To see a clear picture of genetic diseases that run in your family, you can create a medical and/or Psychological genogram.
For your medical genogram, take particular interest in diseases such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, mental alterations (Alzheimer’s disease, depression, schizophrenia, learning problems, mental retardation), thyroid disease, stroke, kidney disease, birth defects (spina bifida, cleft lip, heart defects), and others. Also, pay close attention to cases of alcoholism, smoking, and drug use.
